Motivation - Attitude Determine Our Success

Motivation On Attitude

Attitude towards every circumstances greatly determine whether you can achieve success in life. John Maxwell once said; “ You are only an attitude away from success.”

We may understand more about attitude by what Charles Swindoll said about it;

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say to do. It is more important than appearance, gifted ability, or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace from that day. We cannot change our past, we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing that we can do is play on the one string that we have and this string is, attitude. I am convinced that life is ten percent what happens to me and ninety percent how I react to it. And so it is with you….We are in charge of our attitudes.”

Motivation - Fulfilling Human’s Needs

Everything we do is to satisfy our basic needs and desire at any particular moment. These basic needs excite our behaviour. An unsatisfied need can be our motivator since it causes a behaviour; and that behaviour is, we want to do something to satisfy our desire.

To motivate anyone, we have to know and understand some of the commonly shared human needs. There are five shared human needs; physical, security, belonging, ego and achievement.

Physical needs are men’s basic animal needs. They include the crave for food, water, shelter, sex, basic material comforts, rest, relaxation, recreation, exercise and sleep. Individuals suffering from physical need are quite easy to spot. Often they move slowly, tend to grumble and absent from work. A jogging or exercise program could be proposed.

Security needs include financial, physical (environment) and emotional security – to be protected from bodily harm, to have job security and free from worry. Modern corporations draw up strategies and guidelines for benefits that aimed towards satisfying these employees’ needs.

The need to belong is the next level of human needs. People want to be accepted by others, to be part of the group, to be considered a worthwhile individual in the society. We must recognize that they want to be part of the herd and thus we should avail him the opportunity to have access to as many social and group contacts.

The fourth tier of needs is the ego needs. Ego need is often called the status needs or the need to be recognized. A person with ego needs like to display awards, trophies, he does not like to conform, flashy dreamer, fancy wearing expensive accessories, frequent expensive restaurant, playing golf, driving expensive cars and lots more.

With ego needs having been actualized, a person then advances up the final step to fulfil his last level of desire and that is the “achievement needs”. Acievement needs refers to a person’s self-fulfillment desires or the self-actualisation feelings – the drive to be the best, to be the champion, to win, to develop the fullest potential, to reach the highest peak.

“I thank God for my handicaps for without them I could not have succeeded” Helen Keller.

Self-Motivation : Getting Motivated

Self-Motivation

Many of us set goals but fail to achieve it. We feel hopeless, despair and unmotivated. Others can advise and inspire but the most significant factor that help us change comes from within. This is called self motivation.

How do we remain self motivated to stay on course and finish the task or achieve the goal?

Set your goal and prioritise them. “Never, never, never give in, in whatever you do.” Winston Churchill.

Carry out daily self-development. Read motivational books or listen to motivational tapes. “Learning is wealth to the poor, an honor to the rich, an aid to the young, and a support and comfort to the aged.” John C. Lavatar

Move away from your comfort zone. “Progress is impossible without change; and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” G.B Shaw

When you think, think big. “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” Les Brown

Do not fear mistakes and failure. Learn from it. “Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.” Henry Ford.

Be positive in your thought. “A positive attitude won’t let you do anything. But it will let you do everything better than a negative attitude.” Zig Ziglar.

Stay focus on what you are capable of becoming. Believe in yourself. “If we did the things we are capable of, we would astound ourselves.” Thomas Edison.

Stay close to people with the same ambition and goals. “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that but the really great people make you think that you too can become great.” Mark Twain.

Motivation For Success - Part 3

In a world in which acquiring of knowledge seems to be non-stop in order to stay ahead and on top, we have to do some serious examination and self motivation.

Programme ourselves for success such as taking stock of ourselves, teach ourselves how to control our own mental programs by understanding why, how and what we do.

Understand our life purpose and diligently identify what makes us function and define our mission in life. John Maxwell said, “We cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are.”

Constant self motivation and personal development is a must because this is the foundation and key for making our lives work for the better. “Age is no handicap to learning a new trade, profession, or anything you want to do at any time of life.” E.L. Thorndike.

Model other people who have achieved success. Study and adopt the characteristic of peak performers to achieve success. Charles Adair said; “You get better results if you have high expectation. This is true in science, math, reading, football or band.”

Value ourselves. Until we value ourselves, we won’t value our time, and further until we value our time, we won’t do anything with it.

Increase our skill in influencing other people in a positive manner. The art of personal rapport allows us to get things done by teaming with and leveraging the strength of others. Remember this saying; “No matter what great things you accomplish, somebody helps you.” William Randolph

Adjust our attitude. It is our attitude that determines our direction in life. “A positive mental attitude combined with definiteness of purpose is the starting point of all worthwhile achievement.” Napolean Hill

Motivation Keeps Us Going When The Going Gets Tough

If you are motivated to do something, you are caused to feel determined to achieve something and willing to work harder in order to succeed. A motivated person is one who can pull out or draw out what is inside to accomplish best results. Motivation helps us pull out and make use of things that had long ago been buried and, we thought, forgotten to effective use.

Motivation is the key to keep us going when the going gets tough. This is further substantiated by what Mr. Zig Ziglar said; "Motivation gives you the "want to" and provides the spark to light the fire of knowledge. It enables you to utilize your training and experience while pulling out of you the strength, character, and commitment to keep you going when the going gets tough."

"Motivation fuels that attitude that builds the confidence necessary to sustain the persistence." Zig Zizlar.

Motivation By Definition

The dictionary definition of “motivation” is a noun for “motivate” which is to “cause (person) to act in particular way, stimulate interest of (person in activity)”. While “motive” is what induces person to act, tending to initiate movement”. ( The Oxford Dictionary, New Edition, 1995).

Motivation is the driving force or influence that is capable of bringing out the best in all of us. We all have it, but the question is whether it is a good one or a bad one, whether that motivation is positive or negative. Motivation should not be equated with excitement, enthusiasm and inspiration. The three could be manifestation of motivation and are not motivation in itself.

As human and by nature, we need to be stretched, cautioned, reprimanded or critiqued a bit, otherwise complacency sets in. We need to be cajoled to gets things done and going.

A cowboy riding a horse need to prick his horse with the spur attached to his riding shoes to get that horse run faster. “People and rubber bands have one thing in common: they must be stretched to be effective.” John Maxwell.
